The other piece is usually a duller color, not molded (or ejected) properly, and/or the tolerances cause problems with actual Lego pieces (and sometimes even themselves). Owning a ton of Lego myself I can instantly tell if I see a megablox or competing piece mixed in because it's usually obvious. ![]() Why do you think stuff like megablox is cheaper? Because it is. Since Lego switched to a reformulated and more stable plastic nearly 50 years ago the pieces you bought then if cared for will fit perfectly with the pieces you buy today. they are extremely durable, and the tolerances in manufacture are extremely exacting. Tl dr: the price has actually not correllated to an increase and in fact shows a slight decrease in the price per brick adjusted for inflation over the last 30+ years. Some reading for those who actually care.
